Thorpe assaults player in drunken rage during money games
The Mosconi Cup alum didn't hold back his fists or mouth in the altercation
WARNING: Physical violence and adult language in the linked video.
On Friday, 2/5, a video was circulating among various social networks of American pro Billy Thorpe physically and verbally assaulting Robb Saez during their apparent $200 per game money match. The altercation occurred in Smokin’ Aces in Missouri. According to the video, it appears Thorpe was upset about how the balls were racked and probably didn’t help that he was down many games and had been consuming alcohol.
Thorpe has since come out with an apology and apparently both men have made amends. That’s great, but we all know that the internet never forgets. These days any person’s public Facebook post, tweet, Instagram photo, Snapchat, TikTok, etc. will remain indexed and searchable for eternity. It’s unfortunate but this video will forever be a stain on Billy Thorpe’s otherwise stellar resume.
It remains to be seen whether his sponsors drop him, and if tournaments ban him for a certain amount of time. Also, all eyes are on Matchroom for any official statement on this matter since it has many pro events planned in 2021, including the Mosconi Cup which Thorpe had participated a couple of times as a member of Team USA.
ROBINSON LOSES ANOTHER MARATHON RACE. Danny Olson put on a clinic over the weekend, destroying Chris Robinson 100-65 in 10-Ball. Robinson just hasn’t been doing well in these marathon races for some reason (he had lost to Tyler Styer back in April 2020).
SHOOT OUT WINNER IS RYAN DAY. After four days of fast-action snooker, it was the relatively unknown world 50th-ranked Ryan Day who captured the title. The winner took home £50,000 top prize, and something tells me we’ll see a lot more of Ryan Day in the future.
SHAW WINS PRO-AM TOURNAMENT AT HOME TURF. Last year Jayson “Eagle Eye” Shaw opened US-1 Billiards & Bar in New Haven, CT, to much fanfare, and held a 10-Ball pro-am tourney over the weekend which he won. Kevin West came in second, a very respectable outcome considering the field of competitors.
